Hi,

Just to say that I hope everyone has had a good year this year, and with only 1 and a half hours of 2015 left, let us hope that 2016 will be a great year for everyone!

Happy New Year to everyone on TBAAJ! :happy2:

Happy new year @spotify95 @Zak @lucozadesp0rt etc etc. :hugs:

I'm surprised there is no thread on TSR games counting up or down to a certain point before 2016 starts! :(

Thanks :) :hugs:

I'm surprised as well, but chances are either (a) I haven't found it yet or (b) FG is too damn quiet for anyone to care about it.

But if I was still on there, do you think it'd be active enough for there to be such a thread on there?

Btw, I've already managed to help out this year (or part of last year):

http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthr ... ?t=3792379

Managed to save a fellow TSR'ian about £320 after they decided to repair their own laptop instead of replacing it with a similar spec'd model. Fantastic :)

Can I run over the Straight Dope Message Boards servers with a bus because you didn't get any reputation for that? :banghead:

What type of TV is it? If it's an old nasty CRT TV, then yeah get rid of it via the method you suggested.

Yes, it's a CRT TV from 1996.

In which case, it's a shame we can't do something like this to it! :D

Those old nasty CRTs should be replaced with modern LCD or LED TVs. :yep:

CRTs are still useful for playing old games like gamecube, ps1, dreamcast etc. it has less input lag than LCDs and LED

Well, I tried playing a small joystick based game a while back (one of these Namco Plug & Play games) and it looked much worse on our new 43 inch HD TV, compared to my older 15 inch LCD TV.
Probably because these sort of thing were designed for older, smaller, non HD displays.

I guess these would have looked alright on a CRT... but often, in my experience, if it works on a CRT, it'll work on something else as well.

In my opinion, the only thing that CRTs are useful for, is stuff like this:

haha thats one way of using a CRT :p but yeah for casual gaming anything that was for viewing on a CRT would be fine on newer TVs, however for competitive games where inputs to the frame matter a CRT will give a better performance. It's why they still use CRTs for Super smash bros melee tournaments almost 20 years on  (couldnt find a vid where it shows the setup but you can see in the thumbnail there)

And the original PS1 Spyro series looks better on a CRT, don't you think? (Assuming you've played them before, not just the 'reignited' versions on Xbox One or PS4).

For what I need a monitor for, PC monitors and flatscreen TVs tend to work just fine. In fact my HP OMEN 15 has an in built display with 144Hz refresh rate; I'm sure that will do very nicely for what I need (and I certainly shall not be lugging huge CRTs around!).
The only thing that I could really have a better/older monitor for is playing a small Namco Plug & Play game on, it uses the AV inputs for a TV and outputs at a low resolution, so playing on a large TV is not very good (I tried it before), but it was better on my old smaller 15 inch, non widescreen, LCD TV (which was also not a CRT).

CRTs are (IMO) only good for collectors of older technology and for people who want to build themselves a retro setup.

Also, CRT TVs experience screen burn - which doesn't happen on newer LCDs and LEDs :) (it was only an issue for CRTs and plasma's)
