What is the best laptop to buy?

Postby lucozadesp0rt » January 10th, 2018, 12:34 pm

@spotify95 @pinkteddyx64 @Kyx

Since I won £120 on TSR in amazon gift cards I thought it's a good time to get a new laptop. Is buying laptops off amazon a good idea? I think max I'm looking anywhere between £200-£400. Just a powerful laptop that can run FL Studio (these are the system requirements https://support.image-line.com/knowledg ... php?ans=82) which even my dad's crappy old VAIO laptop can handle fairly okay. Any ideas?

To be honest I've never looked into buying laptops on Amazon; there may be some good laptops out there but there may not be.

I would ideally look more towards the higher end of the figure that you gave. My advice towards buying a laptop, desktop, or any other computer is still the same: get one with Windows 10, and look for a bare minimum of an Intel i3 processor and 4GB RAM. Ideally get one with an i5 and 8GB. An SSD is not a priority as HDDs are bigger and cheaper.
Most programs nowadays will want the above to run smoothly; although your software you linked to will work on Pentium 4, most other day to day stuff certainly won't!
If you can't get at least an Intel i3, then used options and/or ex business machines may be a better shot. Our cheap Windows 10 machine with an AMD E2 CPU really struggles due to the weak CPU!

There's this laptop for £379.99 but with amazon prime (6 months free as a student :p) it's only £209.48

Looks like that laptop has an Intel Atom - ouch! That CPU won't be very good for anything other than the bare basics, and even then, you may be struggling. Atoms are designed for portable devices, like those laptop/tablet hybrids you see for about £100-£200, which are fit for browsing the web on a portable device that is bigger than a smartphone. They were also common in netbooks, and they weren't very powerful either.
Plus only 32GB onboard storage, which isn't recommended for a main computer, especially after a few programs and the bi-annual Windows Update on Windows 10. In fact, I researched this and people have run into problems with new versions of Windows 10 not installing, due to lack of storage on those 32GB devices.
Personally, I'd avoid that, as it doesn't meet my recommendation for a main laptop, of "Intel i3 or better"...

For £200, at that level of spec, you're better off going used at sites such as Tier 1 Online, or even local Gumtree adverts. On Gumtree, you might well get an Intel Celeron or Pentium CPU, or even an i3 CPU if the seller wants rid quickly. (Or, of course, the equivalent AMD CPU.)
Granted, a Celeron or Pentium isn't very good, but it'll be better than one of those nasty Atom CPUs.

From Amazon, this is better: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078GYYC7S/ ... UTF8&psc=1, ideally getting the i3 option as it will be better.

That Thinkpad looks like a decent machine :) ThinkPads are always solid machines that are well built, as ThinkPad's are often used for business use.
I can't comment exactly how they have been refurbished but it should be pretty good :)

A 3rd gen i5 for that price is pretty good :) and you could always take out the 320GB hard drive and put in a 1TB or 2TB :)

Yeah looks good, I remember my brother had a lenovo laptop not sure if it was a thinkpad but it had pretty good specs for a cheap price. Refurbished or not, if the quality of the laptop does not match the description listed I should elligble to get my money back right?

HP's are good; from what I have experienced, HP laptops always tend to do well for me and people I know. My HP is over 2 years old now and doing well :)
The same cannot be said for my Acer Aspire 5742 when it was even 10 months old.

If the refurb laptop does not meet the listing descriptions or has problems then you'll be able to contact Amazon and get your money back on it :)

If you were given cash (or Paypal credit) instead of Amazon vouchers then you could have had a look at Gumtree, or companies that refurb business laptops. But the great thing is, that you've still got plenty of good options via Amazon. :)

@coleslaw

Most universities have an Office365 based system whereby students can download the latest version of Microsoft Office on their devices, when they sign in with their student account - which should be Office 2016. Don't know if schools/colleges have a similar sort of setup.

Failing that, look on eBay for cheap Office licenses. If one doesn't work, raise a case with eBay "not as described" and you'll get a refund.
Various computer/electronics shops may also sell Office licenses but may be more expensive and/or less successful.

My advice: shop around and see what you can get. So long as it is a legal copy, it doesn't matter whether Office 2007, 2010, 2013 or 2016 (though Office 2007 is no longer supported).

If you cannot get a copy of Microsoft Office then you can try other, free, Office packages, such as Open Office, Kingsoft Office, or LibreOffice (the latter is often bundled with Linux OS'es, but will work with Windows).

I do own a legal copy of Office, I just don't have access to it atm.

Okay, cool beans :) I was just wondering if it was an accessibility issue, or whether you didn't have any spare Office licenses :p

Does your school/uni not have an Office system available for students?

Which version of Microsoft Office do you wish to install on it?

Sorry - I completely forgot! Whoops :D Yeah, that sounds like a good plan :)

Though you could also try one of the free alternatives I listed previously, to keep you going until you can get Office installed and activated :)

Does it also have the same functions as Excel? Like the IFS function, INT and VLOOKUP functions?
